Exhausting morning in Zermatt and then off to Chamonix

We made the right decision to do the trip up the Rothorn yesterday as this morning was a little overcast. We had rain overnight and the snow line was much lower

We spent the morning exploring Zermatt and first we started to walk up to a high café overlooking Zermatt. we got part the way up but were defeated by the steepness of the climb and our energy levels at altitude; well that's our excuse. Here are some pics of Zermatt and the views:

 The start of the climb!

View of where we went yesterday: now snow covered!

Our Hotel, the Welschen: a small family run hotel where we have stayed before. Same owners and just as good! Now has lift access from road level.
Matterhorn came briefly out of the clouds

The path was steep and slippery!
So we started our trip to Chamonix: here is our first train at Visp where we changed to an intercity express to Martigny
Where we got on a Mont Blanc Express to Chamonix: express it is not. It has one of the steepest climbs we have done on a main line and then it travels up high above a dramatic Gorge at what seems a very slow pace.
New train without opening windows so difficult to get good pictures!

Last bit of journey was a rail replacement coach, here dropping us at Chamonix station
We were greeted by the views from our balcony!

Time to check out most of the restaurant menus before settling on this one which was excellent!
