Record breaking heat in New York!

As usual we were up early on our first night in New York. Feeling a bit jet lagged we decided to stay close to the hotel and go up the Empire State Building which is only a block (using USA speak already) away. It was clear and sunny so we thought that made it a good decision

There were roped of queuing area but early we just walked straight though and were up to the 86th floor where the views were stunning but a little hazy!

Back to the Hotel for a quick coffee then off to see Grand Central Station. On the way we passed the New York Public Library which we decided to have a look in and it is very impressive!

Library

We were getting hungry by now so following a recommendation from James and David we tried Pershing Square and were not disappointed!

After lunch we explored Grand Central Station, its grand public concourse contrasts with the stark platforms!

Food Hall in the Station complex

After all the walking we decided to use the Subway back to the hotel

Then after another coffee at the hotel off to Herald Square

for a look at Maceys department store

Ground floor has been totally modernised since we last visited, but.....

....great old wooden escalator on top floor!

And finally a not so brilliant meal

As we write this blog the television is tell us this is the hottest ever October 19th since records began at 85F! It has certainly been a hot one and we seem to have packed a fair bit into our first day in the Big Apple!
